Download resolution A139-R2

Subject: Dialogue with the United Church of Canada

Moved by: The Right Reverend George Bruce, Diocese of Ontario

Seconded by: The Venerable Pierre Voyer, Diocese of Quebec

Be it resolved that this General Synod:

a) congratulate the United Church of Canada on its 85th anniversary, and

b) welcome the renewal of dialogue with the United Church of Canada and authorize the Council of General Synod to continue the dialogue for a period of three years, focused on an examination of the doctrinal identities of the two churches and the implications of this for the lives of the churches, including understandings of sacraments and orders of ministry.

Does this motion contain within it any financial implications?    Yes x No __

If yes, has the General Synod Expenditures Committee considered the implications?   Yes __ No __

Faith, Worship and Ministry recognizes and gives thanks for the resumption of dialogue between the Anglican Church of Canada and The United Church of Canada over the past six years.  The St Brigid Report reflects the broad range of topics explored by the two churches after a long period of abstention from formal dialogue.   The dialogue process helpfully identified key issues that deserve further exploration by the two churches.

As the Anglican and United Churches remain committed to Ecumenical Shared Ministries, FWM acknowledges the value of remaining engaged in theological dialogue.  Such dialogue offers a forum for exploration of key doctrinal issues which impact upon the effectiveness of such shared ministries.
