Resolution Number: A225

Subject: Inter-Faith Education and Dialogue

Moved by: The Rt. Rev. Michael Bedford-Jones from the Diocese of Toronto

Seconded By: The Ven. Richard LeSueur from the Diocese of Calgary

Note: The mover and the seconder must be members of the General Synod and be present in the House when the resolution is before the synod for debate.

BE IT RESOLVED:

That this General Synod encourage the Anglican Church of Canada to engage in inter-faith education and dialogue at the local level, ecumenically wherever possible, and direct the Faith Worship and Ministry Committee to advise the church on available resources.

EXPLANATORY NOTE/BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

With increased global migrations, our parish communities are neighbours with people of many faiths. Internationally, there is a perception that faith is a contributing factor to current conflicts. It is important for our sharing in public life that we understand the faith of our neighbours and join in dialogue that assists us to work together for the common good at both the local and national level. Education and dialogue reduce misunderstandings and combat prejudice and discrimination, in keeping with our baptismal promise to respect the dignity of every human being. (BAS, page 159). We can do this most effectively when we join together with our ecumenical partners.

Therefore, we want to encourage dioceses and parishes to engage in interfaith education and dialogue. Faith, Worship and Ministry can assist with appropriate resources.
