  1. My Train/Plane/Bus Has Arrived – Now What?

For most delegates and partners . . . . If you arrive at Winnipeg International Airport, the Via Rail or Bus Station in Winnipeg on Monday, June 18th or Tuesday, June 19th, you will be met by volunteers from the Diocese of Rupert’s Land who will provide transportation to downtown Winnipeg. Hand held signs that read ‘SYNOD’ will identify volunteers.

Those arriving prior to June 18th or departing after June 26th are on their own for the arrangements and expense of traveling between their arrival point and downtown Winnipeg. We hope the information* listed below will be helpful to you in making your arrangements.

Help! - I Missed the Scheduled Pick-up

Winnipeg Airport - First, look for the General Synod volunteers. They will be aware if your flight has been delayed and they will be expecting you. If you are unable to locate a volunteer, please contact the Marlborough Hotel – 204-942-6411.

From the VIA Rail Station or the bus station in Winnipeg, please take a taxi to the Marlborough Hotel, 331 Smith Street. Conference Check In is on the main floor lobby of the hotel.

  1. Driving Directions: (Please note directions are given for both hotels. Careful, please as downtown Winnipeg has many one-way streets.)

To the Marlborough Hotel (331 Smith Street) - From the East (Google Map)

Travel west on the Trans Canada Hwy #1. As you cross Lagimodiere Blvd Hwy #1 becomes Fermor Avenue. Head west on Fermor Avenue about 4km’s to St. Anne’s Road. Turn right (north) on St. Anne’s Road and follow it as it merges slightly into St. Mary’s Road. Continue down St. Mary’s Road over a bridge and you are now on Main Street (about 4 km’s). Follow Main Street to Broadway Avenue (about ½ km) turn hand left onto Broadway Avenue. In just a few blocks, turn right on Smith Street (one-way). Follow Smith Street across Portage Avenue (about 4 blocks). The Marlborough Hotel is located on the right of Smith Street. Unload luggage and passengers, then park in parkade lot located across from the Hotel.

To the Marlborough Hotel – From the West (Google Map)

Travel east on Trans Canada Hwy #1. At the Perimeter Hwy #1 becomes Portage Avenue. Travel along Portage Avenue (approx. 20 kms). As you approach Portage Place Shopping Centre, move to the left hand lane. Turn left on Smith Street (One-way). Marlborough Hotel is located on the right side of Smith. Parking lot is located across the street on Smith. Marlborough Hotel is located on the right of Smith Street; stop and unload luggage and passengers. Parking lot is located across the street on Smith.

To the Radisson Hotel (288 Portage Avenue) - From the East (Google Map)

Travel west on the Trans Canada Hwy #1. As you cross Lagimodiere Blvd Hwy #1 becomes Fermor Avenue. Head west on Fermor Avenue about 4km’s to St. Anne’s Road. Turn right (north) on St. Anne’s Road and follow it as it merges slightly into St. Mary’s Road. Continue down St. Mary’s Road over a bridge and you are now on Main Street (about 4 km’s). Follow Main Street to Broadway Avenue (about ½ km) turn hand left onto Broadway Avenue. In just a few blocks, turn right on Smith Street (one-way). The Radisson Hotel is located at the corner of Portage Avenue and Smith Street (288 Portage Avenue). However, the parkade for the Radisson can only be accessed from Smith Street (left lane).

Travel east on Trans Canada Hwy #1. At the Perimeter Hwy #1 becomes Portage Avenue. Travel along Portage Avenue (approx. 20 kms). As you approach Portage Place Shopping Centre move to the right hand lane. Turn right on either Kennedy, Carlton or Donald Streets (all are one-way streets going south) Go two blocks and make a left turn on York Avenue. Follow York to Smith and make a left hand turn onto Smith. Stay in the left lane as the entrance to the Radisson parkade is just before the corner of Smith and Portage Avenue.

  1. How Do I Register?

Registration for General Synod will take place in the lobby of the Ramada Marlborough Hotel beginning at 1:00 p.m. on June 18th and on June 19th from 9:00a.m – 4:00 p.m. All members need to check in at the General Synod Registration Desk where you will receive a package containing additional information about synod activities, your nametag, meal card, etc.

  1. Where’s My Room?

Prior to General Synod, you will have been informed by correspondence as to where you have been assigned accommodations in downtown Winnipeg. If you have been assigned to the Radisson, please check in at the Radisson and then proceed to the Marlborough Hotel to register for General Synod. Those staying at the Marlborough can check in and register for Synod at the Marlborough.

  1. Name Tags

Your registration package will include a colour-coded nametag, which will identify you as a member of Synod or partner and give your name and diocese. Your name tag will identify you to other Synod members, Secretaries of Synod (for voting and balloting), General Synod, hotel staff, and a host of volunteers. It is very important for you to wear your name tag at all times. Appropriate identification (name tag) is required for access to the Plenary floor will be restricted to those wearing the appropriate identification.

  1. Is the Dining Hall Open?

The first arranged meal is lunch on Tuesday, June 18th (12:00 – 1:30 p.m.) in the Eton Hall at the Marlborough Hotel. Arrangements will be made for delegates who have requested dinner, but who may be arriving later than the posted mealtime.

At registration you will receive detailed information about meals during Synod.

If you arrive prior to lunchtime on June 18th, refreshments are available from the various eating facilities in the Marlborough Hotel or at several other outlets nearby in downtown Winnipeg. Details will be provided in your registration package. If you wish to have a meal in Winnipeg, volunteers will be available to give suggestions and directions to restaurants. A city map will be included in your delegate bag and will be available at the registration desk.

  1. What’s Happening on Tuesday, June 19?

Registration, orientation for all members of Synod, first meetings of sessional committees, presentation rehearsals and the Opening Service will all take place on Tuesday, June 19th. Notice of the exact times and locations of these meetings will be posted in the registration area.
The opening service will be held at the Cathedral Church of St. John located at 135 Anderson Avenue. Buses will leave from the Marlborough Hotel beginning at 6:00 p.m. For those of you who are driving, a map will be available at registration. Priority seating will be given to all General Synod members and others who are registered at Synod. Please be sure to wear your nametag to the service.

  1. Help! I Need to Contact Somebody!

If your plane/train is re-scheduled at the last minute; if you are driving and you get lost, etc., the number to call is 204-942-6411. This will put you through to the main switchboard of the Marlborough Hotel, which is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Your message will be passed along to the appropriate person or you will be given instructions as appropriate.

The following information is provided as a help to those arriving prior to June 18th or departing after June 26th, who are responsible for their own arrangements and expense. This is not applicable to the majority of delegates.

Local taxis will provide service between downtown Winnipeg to the Winnipeg International Airport, Via Rail and Bus Station. If you are traveling with a group of 4 or more people, ask the limousine drivers what their flat-rate fare is between the airport and downtown Winnipeg. It could work out to be less than taxi fare.
